County Commissioner Gary Fickes
From Flying Taxis to Hyperloop One: The Future of Transportation in North Texas
Tarrant County Commissioner Gary Fickes has strong ties to both transportation and Southlake. He chaired the Southlake Chamber of Commerce twice — 1987-88 and in 2002, and he served as Mayor of Southlake in between those terms from 1989 to 1996. He has taken a leadership role in transportation issues throughout his 30+ years of public service and currently chairs the Regional Transportation Commission. He is also a member of the Transportation Steering Committee of the National Association of Counties and the Texas High Speed Rail & Transportation Coalition.
His leadership has helped Northeast Tarrant County — including the Southlake area — improve mobility by helping guide and start the construction of the DFW Connector and Northeast Tarrant Expressway, as well as a great number of other transportation projects.
Commissioner Fickes is best known for the two major events he created 10 years ago: The Empowering Seniors Health & Lifestyle Expo and the Northeast Tarrant Transportation Summit, with each being the largest event of their kind in North Texas.
He has recently returned from a personal tour of the Hyperloop One test facility in Nevada and will share his insights on the future of transportation, from flying taxis and Hyperloop One to high-speed rail and beyond.
